July 2023 Passenger Statistics Drops 29% at Chiang Mai Airport

Chiang Mai International Airport, one of Thailand's prominent travel hubs, experienced a noticeable decline in passenger numbers in July 2023. Compared to the pre-pandemic year of 2019, where the airport welcomed 907,109 passengers in July, the figures dropped significantly to approximately 646,956 passengers in July 2023, representing a 28.67% decrease.

The pandemic's impact on travel demand has significantly affected the decrease in passenger numbers at Chiang Mai International Airport. The global pandemic, with its associated lockdowns and travel restrictions, resulted in diminished interest among travelers to visit the region. Although the government eased travel restrictions on April 01, 2022, allowing entry without a PCR test, various tests have been implemented upon arrival based on the entry model. This easing, while a positive step towards promoting tourism, impacted confidence in travel as potential visitors weighed the additional requirements and uncertainties associated with post-entry testing.

In addition to the above reasons, the aviation industry has witnessed a shift in consumer behavior and preferences during the global pandemic. Many individuals have opted for alternative means of transportation, such as private vehicles or local destinations, to comply with social distancing measures and minimize exposure risks.
