Chiang Mai International Airport, also known as Chiang Mai Airport (IATA: CNX, ICAO: VTCC), is a public, commercial airport serving the city of Chiang Mai, the capital of Chiang Mai Province in Thailand. It is a primary gateway to Northern Thailand and is currently the fourth-busiest airport in the country.

The Royal Thai Air Force owns the facility, operated by the Airport of Thailand PCL (AOT).

It has an elevation of 316 meters, or 1,037 ft., Above Mean Sea Level (ASML). It has a runway designated at 18/36 with an asphalt surface measuring 3,100 by 45 meters.

Chiang Mai Airport has two terminals in a single building, one for domestic passengers and the other for international flights. Arrivals Hall for domestic and international flights can be found on the ground floor; departures take place from the upper floor.

Chiang Mai has officially reopened and launched as the first international flight that brought tourists to the "Charming Chiang Mai" program. Chiang Mai Airport welcomed a flight of 83 travelers from South Korea last November 6, 2021, after two years of being non-functional for public use.

Chiang Mai is a primary gateway to Northern Thailand, becoming an increasingly popular tourist destination. Its international airport welcomes approximately 2 million visitors annually, having 130 flights per week from Bangkok, Singapore, China, Taiwan, Myanmar, and Laos. It is known that the airport can handle 24 flight operations per hour.

The airport has a wide range of facilities to offer to everyone. There are travel agencies at the airport and customer service desks for Thai Airways, Singapore Airlines, Bangkok Airways, AirAsia, Nok Air, and several other airlines. There are several exchange bureaus and ATMs in the terminal as well.

Chiang Mai Airport has several food concessions, including two coffee shops, a deli, and a fast food outlet. Several shops also sell silk, handicrafts, fresh produce, and souvenirs.

The departure lounge has other food and merchandise shops to visit.

History of Chiang Mai International Airport

In 1921, Chiang Mai International Airport was established as Suthep Airport.

In 2008, Thailand's largest airport, Suvarnabhumi Airport, faced a temporary closure due to protests and other internal issues. Hence, Chiang Mai Airport temporarily became the alternative lay-over for China Airlines' Taipei-Europe flights and Swiss International Airlines' Singapore-Zurich flights.

On January 24, 2011, Chiang Mai Airport became a secondary home for Thai AirAsia, and China Airlines' flights became regular flights in the facility.

In 2014, the administration upgraded its facilities for larger aircraft, extended its operating hours 24/7, and renovated international and domestic terminals for a bigger passenger capacity.

In 2018, 31 airlines were operating at the airport, serving about 11 million passengers with more than 78,000 flights and over 14,000 tons of cargo.

Transfer Services at Chiang Mai International Airport

Chiang Mai International Airport offers several transportation options that can

pick up and drop off passengers at the ground transportation area.

Transfer services such as taxis, shuttles, car rentals, rideshares, buses, and minivans are available at the airport.

However, Chang Mai's prevalent mode of transportation is "Songthaew," a sizable converted pick-up truck that caters to few commuting passengers in the metro.

The city's other famous transport system is the "Tuk-Tuk ."It is Thailand's national emblem and modern version of a rickshaw. Tuk-tuk is a three-wheeled motorized vehicle with a seating capacity of two to three average-sized passengers.

Rental Car Services at Chiang Mai International Airport

There are vehicles available for rent at Chiang Mai International Airport.

Foreign and local car rental desks are located on the airport's first floor of the Domestic Arrival Area.

  • An International Driving License is required. However, if the license is not in English, a Notarized Translation of it is needed.
  • The main driver must be a credit cardholder; the Card must have enough funds to cover the excess charge, which will be deducted for the rental duration. The Card will also be required to pay for local fees, extra equipment, and anything purchased at the car rental counter.

Rental rates may vary depending upon your chosen agency and type of vehicle.

Ride Shares at Chiang Mai International Airport

Rideshare vehicles are not famous in Chiang Mai. However, an operating rideshare company offers transfers to and from Chiang Mai International Airport.

In March 2018, Uber merged with Grab, taking over its regional operation. Currently, vehicles under Grab company also function as rideshare services.

Passengers may pre-book their rideshare vehicle by downloading the company's application on their smartphone.

Taxis at Chiang Mai International Airport

Taxis are accessible outside the domestic and international terminals of Chiang Mai Airport.

Chiang Mai Airport is about 5km to and from Chiang Mai city district. Consequently, the estimated fare from the airport to the heart of Chiang Mai and vice versa starts at ฿ 105.00.

There are few buses and minivans that serve the Chiang Mai province.

Trains at Chiang Mai International Airport

Train Transportation is not available within the premises of Chiang Mai International Airport. However, passengers may take a taxi or other mode of transport to the nearest train station, which is about 9km to 10km from the airport.
